Laser Cladding

Laser cladding is a weld overlay process that uses a laser the way conventional welding uses an arc. The deposited material (clad) may be similar to the substrate material as in the case of repairs, or it may offer enhanced wear and/or corrosion resistance.

Apollo-Clad uses CNC and Robotic laser systems to provide precision control during the cladding process. The accuracy and repeatability of these systems provides significant process control advantages over traditional, manual welding and hardfacing processes.

Benefits of Laser Cladding:

Metallurgical Bond

Laser Cladding creates a metallurgical bond between the base material and the overly that will not flake away. The strain test video demonstrates what this means for you and your parts.

The laser clad tungsten carbide overlay was applied directly to a 1018 carbon steel substrate, then surface ground and prepared for tensile testing.  Watch the load increase and notice that the carbide overlay does not flake off, even up to failure at nearly 20% elongation.  The stress relief cracks present in that cladding had no influence on the eventual failure of the material, even though the test was pulled ten times faster than a standard tensile test.

Very Low Total Heat Input

Automated laser systems precisely control heat input for your part. This allows for minimal dilution of the overlay with the base material and results in a very small heat affected zone (HAZ), typically 0.040” (1 mm).

Little to No Distortion

Relatively thin walled components can be clad with minimal to no measurable distortion. Components that cannot be weld repaired using conventional methods due to the risks of distortion can be laser clad while maintaining their dimensions. This allows you to repair only the area damaged.
